PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for managing a tool capable of easily and surely performing set up work when exchanging a tool in a tool magazine. SOLUTION: An NC unit 10 storing tool magazine data, an IC code chip attached to a tool T and storing a tool ID, an IC code reader 30 reading the tool ID from the IC code chip, and a personal computer 40 communicatably connected with the NC unit 10 and storing tool master data are provided. When an updating command is outputted after exchanging the tool T in the tool magazine M, the tool ID of each tool T is sequentially read by the IC code reader 30 while turning the tool magazine M to create index data after tool exchange. Then, the tool master data is updated, and the tool magazine data after tool exchange is created based on the index data after tool exchange and the updated tool master data. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
