A transfer member (12) is charged with toner particles (14). A transfer corotron unit (30) applies charges (32) of reversed sign to the rear side of a sheet (16). A stripping corotron produces alternating charges (33) for neutralizing residual charges on the printed sheet (16). An air blast is tangentially blown onto the rear side of the printed sheet so that the sheet detaches from the transfer member as a result of a radially directed force. An Independent claim is included for a method of releasing a sheet from a transfer member.
