PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce size and weight of a cylinder block of an internal combustion engine provided with a cover covering a cam shaft driving mechanism by utilizing a space part of the cylinder block formed by reducing a size of the cover and increasing stiffness of the space part. SOLUTION: The cam shaft driving mechanism M2 arranged on a right end surface 20 of the cylinder block 1 of the internal combustion engine is covered by the cover attached on an attachment surface 67 of a attachment part 69. A projecting part 76 projecting from a retreated attachment surface 67a in a side view toward a front end surface 25 in a perpendicular direction D2 to form a contour 68 is formed in the space part S formed between the retreated attachment surface 67a and the contour 68 at the right end surface 20 as one body with the retreated attachment part 61a.
