<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarizing optical system for a reflection type liquid crystal panel made compact as a whole, that is, having high volume utilization efficiency, consisting of a small number of parts, and having the high utilization efficiency of the light quantity of a light source. <P>SOLUTION: The polarizing optical system is provided with a pyramid-shaped light tunnel prism, a polarizing beam splitter arranged near the emitting surface of the pyramid-shaped light tunnel prism and transmitting incident 1st P polarized light to be 2nd P polarized light and reflecting incident 3rd S polarized light as 4th S polarized light, a reflection member for refracting either the 2nd P polarized light or 4th P polarized light at a right angle, and a 1/2 wavelength plate stuck to the polarizing beam splitter in order to change the 4th S polarized light to 5th P polarized light. A single layer coat having the thickness of the 1/4 wavelength of substance whose refractive index is ≤1.4, for example, MgF<SB>2</SB>is provided on the incident surface and the exit surface of the polarizing beam splitter. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
