PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suitably suppress the dispersion in an output characteristic at each cylinder due to the change of a shaft length in a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine equipped with a mechanism capable of being changed for a valve characteristic of an engine valve provided in each cylinder by displacing a shaft in the axial direction. SOLUTION: The valve characteristic of the engine valve provided in a plurality of cylinders 11 respectively can be continuously changed by continuously displacing a control shaft 27 with a lift amount changing actuator 30. In the cold state, the dispersion in an output torque due to the dispersion in the lift amount between each cylinders 11 owing to the contraction of the control shaft 27 is suppressed by correcting an ignition timing for every cylinder 11.
