1278585 Brazing JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd 26 Aug 1969 [10 Sept 1968] 42919/68 Heading B3R [Also in Division H1] In interconnecting a number of battery plates for use in a cell of an alkaline battery, each of which comprises a silver support grid 11 carrying active material and having a silver terminal lug 12, each lug is coated with silver solder having a higher resistivity and lower melting point than silver, the coated lugs are maintained in contact and current is passed between them to melt the silver solder, without melting the silver, to join them. The silver lug 12 of each grid is welded thereto and is cranked so that the assembled lugs are parallel and close together. The silver solder is coated to a thickness of 0À0015 inch and the coated lugs are located in a slot in a silver-plated brass terminal post 13. Molybdenum or "Elkonite" (Registered Trade Mark) electrodes contact the post and pass current through the lugs to melt the solder excess of which flows into the recess in the terminal post. The silver support grids of zinc plates of an alkaline battery may be similarly interconnected. |
