PURPOSE: A structure and a method for controlling packet processing in an ATM switch fabric are provided to prevent a loss of packet boundary cells, even though a loss of generic cells is caused due to congestion, by embodying an EOP(End Of Packet) cell buffer to store packet boundary cells and managing it through per connection queues. CONSTITUTION: An ATM switch fabric basically consists of a plurality of line cards(40-1-40-N) having input cell buffers(41) to temporally store the cells incoming from their respective input lines and a crossbar switch(50) to execute switching operation actually. In addition, each of the line cards(40-1-40-N) comprises an EOP cell buffer(44). Each EOP cell buffer(44) stores packet boundary cells, in which the LSB bit of a PTI field recorded in each cell header is '1', and manages a loss of cells. Each EOP cell buffer(44) is composed of per connection queues. The per connection queues are connected and managed in a linked list structure so that the boundary of each packet can be discriminated even though generic cells are all lost due to congestion.
