General arrangement.-A -web 1 of paper is fed to cutting, device 2 and sheets 3 produced thereby are delivered to continuously moving endless belts 4, 5 and then to a stacking receiver including support 11 and stop 10, the sheets being retarded before stracking by engagement of the trailing ends thereof with slower moving conveyer 14. Carriers; sheet retarding device.-As each sheet 3 leaves belts 4, 5a it is engaged on one side by a perforated endless belt 12, the sheet engaging run of which co-operates with a first suction box 13, and the sheet is thereby carried over support 11 The trailing end portion of the sheet is engaged by a perforated endless band conveyer 14, the sheet engaging run of which co-operates with suction box 15, and the sheet is thereby fed up to the stop 10. The epacing between the sheet engaging run of band 14 and that of band 12 permits the leading end of the next oncoming sheet to passs over the trailing end of the preceding sheet being moved by band 14. The trailing edge of each sheet is sensed by photo-cell 18 and a signal is passed via delay generator 20 to a solenoid operable to apply suction at box 15. Simultaneously suction is cut off from box 13. When a batch of superimposed lightweight sheets is being handled suction box 13 may be omitted and a reciprocable pad 28 provided, Fig. 3, which may be actuated by a solenoid 26a and thereby caused to move downwards, when suction is applied to box 15, to hold the sheet against band 14. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 5 to 7, not shown) the application of suction to box 15 and the descent of pad 28 is under the control of a cam mechanism driven through a differential gear 37 by lower cutter element 2. Pad 28 may be connected to an air supply to form an air cushion between it and a sheet on belt 14 or may be a solid member provided with a rubber underside. Receivers; switches.-The support 11 may be lowered into a horizontal position to facilitate removal of a stack. Succeeding sheets may be diverted on to a second support 11a by deflector 128. Guides.-The sheets may be stiffened longitudinally by upturning their end portions as they are delivered with intermittently rotating plough elements 44, Fig. 9, which extend from the front end of suction box 15 to the stop 10. Elements 44 are caused to turn through 90 degrees at each movement and operate in timed relation to cutter 2. An initial upturning of the end portion of the sheets may be effected by providing additional stationary plough elements immediately preceding suction box 15.</p> |
