1,154,732. Extruding; upsetting; making waveguides. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. 2 June, 1966 [4 June, 1965], No. 7530/69. Divided out of 1,154,731. Headings B3A, B3H and B3P. A portion of a body 24 is shaped by frictionally engaging the portion with a transporting member 16, applying a first pressure by means of a compressible member 114 on which the body can slide, and applying a second pressure to the member 16 so as to press the portion into a die 22, the pressures being sufficient to set up a hydrostatic pressure condition in the body portion. The workpiece 24 is preferably tubular and has a flange 26 upset on one end so as to form a waveguide. A pressure sleeve 114 of low friction resilient and deformable material, made in one or two parts, is placed around the workpiece 24 which contains a mandrel 16, and the sleeve is compressed on to the workpiece by a forcing member 120 which has a tapered surface with serrations or teeth 121. After preloading the member 120 by bolts 132, the mandrel 16 is moved downwardly and simultaneously pressure 139 is applied to the member 120. This produces a hydrostatic condition in the workpiece 24 causing its extrusion through the die 22 and into the chamber 156 to form the flange 26. Pressure is maintained on the material in chamber 156 by a back-up die 160 loaded by pressure liquid supplied by pump 60. |
