The deflection of a beam supporting the lower lip of the slice of a headbox of a papermaking machine is controlled by creating a difference in temperature between an upper and a lower portion of the beam. The upper portion may be heated electrically, or by heated gas or liquid passing through a channel therein. Alternatively, or in addition, the lower portion may be cooled by a fluid sprayed thereon or passing through a channel therein. The difference in temperature may be automatically regulated to compensate partly or fully for deflection in the beam due to the stock pressure.
|
