PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wheelchair allowing a user to get on and maneuver the wheelchair safely because the wheelchair is automatically braked when the user is not sitting on the wheelchair. SOLUTION: Since a seat of the wheelchair is in its return position before the user of the wheelchair sits on the seat 27, a brake part 30 is driven from the seat via a brake wire 40 and wheels 22 are automatically braked, so that the wheelchair cannot be moved. However, when the user sits on the seat, the seat is moved downward and the brake part is driven from the seat part via the brake wire and the brake acting on the wheels is automatically released, and therefore, the user can freely maneuver the wheelchair. Accordingly, the user of the wheelchair can safely get on and maneuver the wheelchair. In addition, the wheelchair can be provided inexpensively by using members of a bicycle. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
