The escalator or moving pavement includes a chain-tensioning device with a spring between the escalator or moving pavement and bearing of the chain wheel to keep the chain under tension. An inductive or capacitive travel sensor (30) transmits an output signal continuously in dependence upon the distance covered from the bearing. The travel sensor is connected to a computer unit (32) by which the distance in relation to the frame (18) is registered and measured.
