1,163,423. Shaped articles of fluorine containing polymers. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 10 Nov., 1966 [24 Nov., 1965], No. 49944/65. Heading B5A. [Also in Divisions C3 and F2] Bearings (e.g. tape and bridge bearings), porous membranes for use in fuel cells and other shaped articles are made of fluorine containing polymers with carbonaceous residues by impregnating a carbonaceous structure of the desired shape with a liquid dispersion of a fluorine containing polymer, drying and heating to carbonize the carbonaceous material and sinter the polymer. The polymer is preferably P.T.F.E. used in an aqueous dispersion and the impregnation is preferably carried out under vacuum. The carbonaceous material is preferably cellulosic such as paper and papier machÚ polyacrylonitrile fibres or an open-celled phenol formaldehyde foam. P.T.F.E. is preferably sintered at 370-390‹ C. and if sheet paper has been used, the sheets may be calendered and pressed between sheets of glass. |
