A reactor 1, has a portion 8 of an inlet 5 which provides a controllably variable cross section, which cross section may be varied in the method of the invention such as to balance the inflow of gases into the reactor to prevent flashback due to an incorrect flow rate. The reactor 1 may be a catalyst reactor. A greater cross-section may be provided at higher reactions rates. If the feed gas flow is too low, catalyst layers 3 may overheat gases in the main body of the unit resulting in combustion flashback which may reduce the efficiency of the unit due to underheating from the loss of overall heating energy caused by the flashback event. The correct operating temperature profile is shown by line T1, which may be maintained by inlet 5 cross-section variation as described. The underheating profile follows line T2, as a result of flashback loss of energy at Q2. |
