A drawing and writing aid for a child has a frame (18) holding a drawing insert comprising a plastic envelope with an opaque paste filling loaded with pigment, which is displaced to highlight the drawn lines. The system is enhanced by fitting a hinged back screen to enable different coloured background sheets to be inserted. The drawing insert can be removed simply by unclipping the front frame and lifting out the insert, e.g. for retaining the drawing.
