1,147,380. Filter cigarette-making machines. R. J. REYNOLDS TOBACCO CO. 29 Dec., 1967 [5 Jan., 1967], No. 59231/67. Heading A2C. In an apparatus for uniting assemblies 11 of double length filters between two cigarettes, uniting bands 8 coated with a heat-activatable adhesive are heated on a suction cutting drum 1, tacked along one coated margin to assemblies 11 suctionally held on a transfer drum 3, and transferred to a rolling drum 5 where at least the tacked margin of the bands 8 are cooled prior to rolling the bands 8 about the assemblies 11 with further heating to complete the wrapping. A rolling shoe 6 is provided with suitably spaced ridges 6g to commence the rolling of the assemblies 11 and to roll them out of grooves 5a in the drum 5 into which they fall during rolling. The shoe 6 comprises an unheated section 6a, an electrically heated section 6c which may be thermostatically controlled, and an unheated cooling section 6e. Heat insulating spacers 6b and 6d may comprise an air gap or insulating material. Sections 6a, b, c, d, e, are of the same width as the bands 8 and are flanked on either side, and insulated from, unheated sections (6f) to permit the even rolling of the entire length of each assembly 11. |
