VIDEO TAPE RECORDER AND RECORDING METHOD

A video tape recorder for recording, particularly, video signals of HDTV (High Definition TeleVision) onto a magnetic tape, wherein at least management information (ETN) of reproduction reference is recorded in a main sector in the picture order of video data to be reproduced and is recorded in a subcode sector in the picture order of compressed video data. The data for retrieval are recorded based on the time management information of the video data to be decoded, while the data for display are recorded based on the time management information of the video data to be reproduced.
