1293407 Germicidal compositions containing iodine and non-ionic surfactants BASF WYANDOTTE CORP 19 Dec 1969 [26 Dec 1968] 62146/69 Heading A5E A germicidal composition consists essentially of (a) from 5 to 25 parts by weight of a complex of iodine and a cogeneric mixture of non ionic surfactants having the formula R‹-A-X-(MH)a wherein R‹ is H or X(MH)a, A is a straight chain hydrocarbyl radical having from 8 to 22 carbon atoms, X N, SO 3 N or SN, R is C 1-4 alkyl and M is E‹, P-E‹, P‹-E‹, P-E, P‹-E, E-P, E-P‹ E-E‹, E‹-P, E‹-P‹ or E‹-E wherein P represents oxypropylene groups, E represents oxyethylene groups, P‹ represents a mixture of oxypropylene and oxyethylene groups, the weight ratio of oxypropylene to oxyethylene being at least 1 and E‹ represents a mixture of oxyethylene and oxypropylene groups, the weight ratio of oxyethylene to oxypropylene being at least 1, the total weight ratio of oxyethylene to oxypropylene in M being from 0.5:1 to 3:1, M being present in the surfactant to the extent that it constitutes from 55 to 80 weight % of the total surfactant; (b) from 1 to 35 parts by weight of an acid; (c) from 20 to 92 parts by weight of water; and (d) from 2 to 20 parts by weight of a cogeneric mixture of compounds having the formulae (I) A-O-R-H or (II) A-O-(oxypropylene) b-(oxyethylene) a-H wherein A is C 10-20 alkyl, R is a random mixture of oxyethylene and oxypropylene groups, said mixture being from 67% to 80% of the total weight of the compound, the weight ratio of oxyethylene to oxypropylene in said mixture being in the range of from 3.5:1 to 7:1, and a and b are integers such that the weight ratio of oxyethylene to oxypropylene is from 3.5:1 to 7:1 and the total weight of oxyethylene to oxypropylene groups is from 67% to 80% of the compound. The acid may be phosphoric, hydrochloric, sulphamic, hydroxyacetic, citric, and/or malic acid. |
