The crystallinity of poly-alpha-olefins is improved by adding small amounts of a nucleating material such as sodium benzoate in the form of a masterbatch to the polymer prior to forming. The masterbatch is prepared by making a nearly saturated solution of e.g. Na to the solution so that a gel-like solution is obtained to which poly-alpha-olefin powder is added, the solids separated by usual methods, dried at room or slightly higher temp. The resultant masterbatch preferably contains 30-40% Na benzoate. The masterbatch is then added to the poly-alpha-olefin so that 0.1-1.0% of Na benzoate is present. Formed articles have good transparency, stiffness, tensile strength, etc.
|
