A system in which an Ethernet LAN (1) and voice equipment (2) share a circuit (3) from a subscriber premise to a provider premise in a manner which guarantees signal quality for the voice equipment (2) and at the same time significantly increases the available bandwidth for data is disclosed. The system includes a plurality of subscriber loops (6) extending from the subscriber premise to the provider premise; a plurality of WAN transceivers (5), each associated with one of the plurality of subscriber loops (6), each for sending and receiving packets over the associated subscriber loop (6); a packet manager (8) for controlling the flow of all packets to and from the WAN transceivers; an Ethernet physical layer interface (10) and media access controller that connects the Ethernet LAN (10) to the packet manager (8) providing packets to the packet manager (8); a telephone line interface (11) which digitizes analog signals from the voice equipment (2) thereby providing packets for transmission to the packet manager (4), and wherein the packets to be sent are kept in a single queue by the packet manager (8) in the order in which they are received from the Ethernet LAN or voice equipment.
|
