Glassware is coated with stannic chloride by vapourizing the stannic chloride and using air under pressure to spray the vapourized stannic chloride on the glassware, both the air and the stannic chloride being heated to a temperature which will prevent the stannic chloride from crystallizing as it is sprayed. As shown in Fig. 4, a spray chamber has side walls 83 with openings 85 to receive vertically and laterally adjustable spray nozzles B. The bottom of the chamber is closed by a travelling conveyer belt 84 which transports bottles through the chamber. The top 87 of the chamber is provided with a gap 89 through which projects the neck of the bottle. The gap is formed by two parallel adjustable exhaust ducts 71 connected to a suction fan. The ducts prevent any coating materials from being deposited on the necks of the bottles. The vertical side 73 and horizontal side 75 of the exhaust ducts have adjustable openings 77 through which the coating material is exhausted. Slides 79 having openings 81 are mounted on the faces 73 and 75 and are used to adjust the size of openings 77. The exhaust from the ducts 71 are passed through conduits 9 to the exhaust manifold. Deflector vanes (Fig. 6 not shown) can be adjustably moutned opposite the nozzles to ensure even coating of the glassware. As shown in Fig. 2, a preferred form of nozzle comprises a solid body 39 which is machined on its surface to provide ribs 41, each rib being cut out for a certain portion of its length. The cut outs in every second rib are arranged in rows and the cut outs in the other ribs are arranged in a second row offset from the first. The body is covered with a shell 45 to provide a closed zig zag path for the air flowing through the cut outs in the ribs. The body has a central bore 47 to a receive a stannic chloride supply pipe 49. Two heaters 51 are inserted into two holes 53 in the body, to heat both the air and the stannic chloride. The air entering the body at inlets 57 passes through the outer rib section, through conduits 59 into an annular channel 60 in an air cap body 61. The air cap body has conduits leading from the channel to direct the air from openings 62 against the stannic chloride as it emerges from nozzle 55 and is provided with a recess 64 to receive the nozzle 55. The nozzle is biased in the recess by spring 65. |
