PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an auto white balance control method that can relieve a processing load on a control section (CPU) mounted on an electronic camera capable of photographing a moving picture, so as to reduce the cost and momentarily adapt white balance adjustment to a case that a photographing scene is greatly changed, so as to obtain an excellent video image and to provide the electronic camera capable of executing the method. SOLUTION: The method includes the steps of: performing auto white balance (AWB) processing just after application of power to the camera in a moving picture photographing mode to allow a liquid crystal monitor to display a video image (through-image) during photographing; executes the AWB processing when a photographing switch S1 is depressed and an instruction for photographing preparation is entered to fix the white balance; photographing a moving picture in response to an instruction (S2=ON) for photographing start; and periodically acquiring an evaluation value of the AE while executing no periodic AWB processing during photographing of the moving picture on the other hand and re-executing the AWB processing when the evaluation is fluctuated over a specified value.
