The method involves separating the data stream (BDS) into symbol streams (SS1,2) before spreading, whereby successive QPSK symbols are alternately associated with one of the symbol streams, spreading, scrambling and amplitude scaling a symbol stream in one branch, logically combining a second symbol stream with the first in a second branch, spreading, scrambling and amplitude scaling the result and summing with the signal from the first branch.
