[Also in Division C3] A composition for the impregnation of paper or non-woven materials comprises a latex of an interpolymer of at least 50%, a vinyl or vinylidene halide with not more than 50 % of one or more comonomers at least one of which is a C 1 -C 8 alkyl acrylate or methacrylate and 1-60% by weight of the polymer latex of either a drying oil or an unsaturated alkyd resin, preferably added as an oil-in-water emulsion. Preferred coplymers are vinyl chloride/ vinylidene chloride/2-ethyl hexyl acrylate, and optionally acrylic acid, vinylidene chloride/nbutyl acrylate, vinyl chloride/ethyl acrylate vinyl chloride/methyl acrylate. Exemplified drying oils are tung oil and dehydrated castor oil and alkyds are derived from phthalic or isophthalic acid with linseed and soya oil or sunflower oil. Dioctyl phthalate or tricresayl phosphate plasticiser may also be added. In the examples papers are impregnated with the latices, dried and cured giving increased dry and wet strength. |
