PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an optically active compound represented by general formula (III). SOLUTION: The method for producing the optically activeβ-hydroxyester compound represented by general formula (III) [R1is a hydrocarbon group which may be substituted or the like; R2is different from R1and is a nitrogen- containing heterocyclic group represented by general formula (V) [the ring may be substituted]; R3is a hydrocarbon group which may be substituted or the like; R4and R5are the same or different and each is a hydrogen atom or a halogen atom, respectively; * is the center of optical activity] comprises reacting a compound represented by general formula (I) with a compound represented by general formula (II) [X is a halogen atom] in the presence of cinchona alkaloid.
