PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a conventional problem in which a finish height Ls of a stud cannot be determined accurately because of variance in the overall length of the stud in arc stud welding. SOLUTION: With the stud held in the holder of a welding gun, a contact member 2 is abutted on an object to be welded for positioning. Successively, the upper end of the stud is raised to a reference height Lu, with the tip end of the stud lowered until it comes into contact with the object. Then, the stud is raised again, with an arc generated to melt the object, and the stud is lowered again and pushed in to complete the stud welding. Simultaneously, each moving distance Lr, Lp and Ld of the stud upper end at the time of the lowering, the raising, and the re-lowering respectively are calculated. Then, on the basis of these calculation results and the reference height Lu, the finish height Ls, i.e., a distance from the object to the stud upper end after completion of the welding, is determined from the expression of (Lu-Lr+Lp-Ld) in this method.
