PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader, capable of simultaneously reading the images of a double-sided original and efficiently reading a single-sided original, having an independently provided read means. SOLUTION: In the image reader 1, image data obtained by reading the image of the front surface of an original P, being carried by a reading section 101, is subjected to image processing by a first image processing section 106 and is temporarily stored in a first data-storing section 111, and image data obtained by reading the image of the back surface of the original P is subjected to image processing by a second image processing section 107 and is temporarily stored in a second data-storing section 112. Then, the data stored in the sections 111, 112 are successively transferred. In the case of the single-sided original P, the image data obtained by reading the original P by the section 101 and processed by the section 106 are stored, while switching between the sections 111 and 112, and are successively transferred by a data transfer section 113.
