PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer in which high speed processing can be carried out without using a large or expensive motor. SOLUTION: The printer comprises a carry roller 6 for carrying a recording sheet 10 forward F and reversely R, a driven gear 5 fixed to the carry roller 6, a carriage drive motor 1 comprising a stepping motor, and a drive gear 3 engaging with the motor gear 2 of the carriage drive motor 1. The drive gear 3 engages with first and second rolling gears 12 and 13 held by a rolling lever 4. Depending on the rotational direction of the drive gear 3, any one of the first and second gears 12 and 13 revolves round the drive gear 3 to engage with the driven gear 5 thus changing the speed reducing ratio.
