PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To present a characteristic term suitable for a retriever with respect to an arbitrary retrieval term and provide an efficient information retrieval technique. SOLUTION: An index database 12 is constructed in advance from information in various recording media 10, 11, from which characteristic terms are extracted which are associated with a keyword 3 input by the retriever. The characteristic terms are presented to and designated by the retriever, thereby the easy information retrieval is realized at a high speed. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
