<p>A thermal printer for producing a printing on the surface of a foil. Ink is transferred to the foil by heating specific locations of a thermal transfer ribbon, causing the ink to be fluid. Printing is achieved by sandwiching the ribbon between the foil and an energizable printing means. The ribbon is then moved relative to the foil so that the ink is smeared onto the foil at the locations heated by the printing means. In order to allow the ribbon to be accelerated or decelerated without simultaneously accelerating or decelerating the delivery and take-up reels, the ribbon is delivered from the delivery reel to a first spring biased tensioning pin, moved past the printing means to a second spring biased tensioning pin and then received by the take-up reel.</p> |
