A power supply system of the type used to power railway locomotives (L1, L2, L3) has transformer (3) in each stage with the primary coupled to the overhead rail pick-up (1). The transformer connects to a four qudarant rectifier (GR1, GR2) providing an intermediate d.c. voltage. The voltage is applied to a d.c. intermediate circuit (ZK) and an output a.c. inverter drive stage (WR) delivers a supply to a.c. async. motors (5, 6). The rectifiers are controlled by a unit that generates signals phase-controlled to switch the thyristor stages. The phase angle is determined by a microprocessor. ADVANTAGE - Controlled switching eliminates unwanted transients.
