PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which has an intermediate transfer belt, fixing belt, etc., and assures releasability from a toner, etc., by applying a release agent in the stage of use to the surfaces of the intermediate transfer belt, the fixing belt, etc., and which can suppress the adhesion of the surfaces of the intermediate transfer belt, the fixing belt, etc., to the toner in the initial stage of their use particularly without generating the contamination by coating with the release agent. SOLUTION: The surfaces of the intermediate transfer belt, the fixing belt, etc., used in the image forming apparatus are coated with the release agent, such as dimethyl silicone oil, in at least the stage of their no use and the coated surfaces are subjected to a pretreatment for release to allow a touching member to touch these surfaces. The pretreatment for release consists of the treatment to perform an adhesion increasing treatment to increase the adhesion of the intermediate transfer belt, etc., to the toner images on the surfaces in combination before or simultaneously with the coating application of the release agent.
