A control apparatus is provided for enabling a user to communicate by speech with processor-controlled apparatus (1) having a display (44) an audio input (42) and a pointing device (40) for enabling the screen location at which the user's attention is directed to be determined. When the said screen location at which the user's attention is directed coincides with a location on the screen that corresponds to certain determined locations on the screen the user is provided with a prompt to assist the user in formulating a spoken command that initiates use of data. In one embodiment a gaze detection arrangement is used.
