Composition useful for preparing sperm solutions for artificial insemination, e.g. of horses, includes glucose, lactose, citrate, buffer and skim milk powder

Liquid composition (L1) comprising the following ingredients in water is new: glucose monohydrate (0.1-50 g/l), lactose monohydrate (0.1-50 g/l), sodium citrate dihydrate (0.1-1 g/l), potassium citrate (0.1-1 g/l), Hepes (0.1-10 g/l), skim milk powder (40-60 g/l) and optionally antibiotic (10-100 mg/l). Independent claims are also included for: (1) powder composition (P1) giving L1 on dissolution in water; (2) production of a sperm solution for fertilizing oocytes by warming L1 (optionally prepared from P1 and optionally stored at 4degreesC for up to 7 days or stored frozen at -20degreesC and then thawed and stabilized at 18-25degreesC for 30 minutes) to working temperature (not defined) for 15 minutes per 100 ml, mixing sperm (optionally filtered through gauze) with L1, optionally centrifuging the mixture and removing the supernatant by decantation or suction, and (if L1 contains glycerol) resuspending the pellet in L1 and storing it at -196degreesC; (3) fertilizing oocytes by producing a sperm solution as above, optionally warming it to 20-37degreesC, and using it to fertilize oocytes; (4) a flask containing L1.
