A garment (2) is connected by a tube (3) to a fan (V) delivering air at a suitable pressure, with the fan housing fitted with a filter (F) to remove contamination from the ambient air. The fan is powered by a battery (B) connected to it by a cable (4), and has a switch (5) controlling its two operating modes: one for cooling and the other for NBC protection. The switch can be fitted with an aneroid capsule that automatically activates the cooling mode at pressures corresponding to higher altitudes, e.g. over 12500 feet.
