PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coin identifying method for reliably obtaining the image of the side surface of a coin regardless of the state of the side surface of the coin even when a wide range of coin image is obtained by an area sensor, etc., and also identifying the thrown-in coin and also to provide a coin identifying device. SOLUTION: A pattern identifying part 15 extracts a line provided with only the feature of a projection in the coin to be detected, or a line provided with only the feature of a recession in the coin to be detected, from the image of the coin to be detected picked-up by an image sensor 12.
