<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nickel - hydrogen storage battery excellent in the high- rate discharging characteristic which is equipped with a positive electrode using as active material a powder chiefly containing nickel hydroxide and a negative electrode using as active material a powder of hydrogen occluding alloy chiefly composed of rare earth element(s) and nickel (Ni) and having a CaCu<SB>5</SB>type crystal structure and which can quickly be activated in its initial period of operation. <P>SOLUTION: The negative electrode of this nickel - hydrogen storage battery contains powder of hydrogen occluding alloy containing Mn, chiefly composed of rare earth element(s) and nickel (Ni), having a CaCu<SB>5</SB>type crystal structure, and having a rate of magnetization of 1.5 emu/g or more. In the initial activation of the battery in which charges and discharges are conducted repetitively, the rate of magnetization of the hydrogen occluding alloy is enhanced by subjecting the battery charged at least one time to an aging at a temperature of 60-70°C in the condition that the charging electric amount per charging run does not exceed 130% of the rated capacity. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO</p> |
