The drive unit has a vertical drive shaft (1) provided with a number of opposing wind catchment surfaces (3,4) positioned at 90 degrees to one another, which pivot about horizontal axes (2) and which are coupled to the latter via intermediate coupling elements (3a,4a), arranged so that the centre of gravity of each wind catchment surface lies below the pivot axis. The wind catchment surfaces may be fitted with variable weights (3b,4b) at their lower edges.
