PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the width of a medium quickly by reducing the effect of the type (color, reflectivity, or the like) of the medium. SOLUTION: A sensor circuit 51 detects the information of a medium (sheet), i.e., the reflectivity, during single scanning operation of the medium in the widthwise direction from one end side to the other end side, and a memory 54 stores the reflectivity in correspondence with the number of pulses N of a carriage drive motor 38 corresponding to the scanning position. A controller 52 determines the position where the medium exists based on the information of reflectivity stored in the memory 54 and detects the width of the medium. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
