The internal combustion engine cylinder includes a first spark plug (7) is situated with its electrodes on one edge of the fuel injection cone, and a further spark plug (8) on the opposite edge of the fuel injection cone. The spacing of the electrodes is different in the two plugs, in order to assist reliable ignition. The internal combustion engine with conventional pistons moving in a four stroke cycle includes a fuel injector (4) situated centrally within the combustion chamber (3). The injector introduces the fuel into the chamber in an injection cone shape (6). A first spark plug (7) is situated with its electrodes on the edge of this injection cone. A further spark plug (8) is also situated with its electrodes in the combustion chamber, also on an edge of the fuel injection cone. The spacing of the electrodes (10) on this second spark plug is slightly greater than that of the first spark plug (9).
