<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a desulfurization method which solves the problems that it is necessary to thoroughly remove sulfur compounds contained in fuel used for a fuel cell since the catalyst used in a fuel cell system tends to be poisened by the sulfur compound and that it is necessary to effectively perform desulfurization under a low pressure in order to add a desulfurizer into the fuel cell system, and the fuel cell system using the method. <P>SOLUTION: A sulfur-containing hydrocarbon can be desulfurized to a sulfur content of 0.1 mass ppm or lower by bringing the sulfur-containing hydrocarbon into contact with (1) a catalyst A comprising a carrier containing an activated carbon, carrying nickel oxide and zinc oxide each in an amount of 1-49 mass% with the total of 5-50 mass%, (2) a catalyst B comprising a carrier containing a zeolite or a clay compound, carrying at least one metal selected from Pt, Pd and Re in an amount of 0.01-10 mass%, and (3) a catalyst C containing at least 20 mass% zinc oxide and/or nickel oxide. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
