This invention relates to a personal conveyance (1) for recreational use. It includes a baseplate (4) having provision for attachment of at least two axl e assemblies (5). The axle assemblies (5) are adapted to receive large diamete r wheels (6) which extend above and perpendicular to the plane of the baseplat e (4). The position and size of the wheels (6) contribute to improved overall stability, an improved ride over a variety of uneven surfaces, provide the potential for improved speed, provide ankle protection and yet afford the us er with the ability to retain directional control. The invention may be in the form of roller skates, a skateboard, in-line skates or a scooter. It also includes steering and braking means (8). The personal conveyance (1) may als o include a lowered centre of gravity which contributes to further improved stability and again lessens the likelihood for injury to the ankles of users .
