PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a press and a method of pressing where a work piece to be worked is thermally compressed to perform pressing, defects such as precision deterioration in the thickness direction of the work piece are hardly generated and pressing time is not extended. SOLUTION: A constitution is so made that the press has a metal plate 140 which covers the surface of the work piece side on a hot panel 130 and is fixed in place to the hot panel so as to enable the same and the surface of the work piece side on the hot panel 130 to be spaced out at a predetermined distance, a heating medium oil filled in a clearance section between the hot panel 130 and the metal plate 140 and a heating medium pressure control means, the heating medium oil is filled in the heating medium pressure control means, which has a first hydraulic pressure cylinder 510 connected with the clearance section, in which a hydraulic oil is filled, and which also has a second hydraulic cylinder 520 connected with the first hydraulic cylinder 510 in series, and a pressure of the heating medium oil is controlled by pressure-feeding the hydraulic oil to one spacing inside the second hydraulic cylinder 520.
