PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently and simply obtain various multi-substituted biaryl compounds including compounds having large steric hindrances around the biaryl axes. SOLUTION: A method for producing the biaryl compound represented by formula (1) (R1to R4are each identically or differently H, a hydrocarbon group, or the like; the ring A is an aromatic ring which may have one or more substituents) comprises reacting a cyclobutenone derivative represented by formula (2) with a ring represented by formula (3) (M is a monovalent or divalent metal, or the like) and then thermally refluxing the obtained reaction mixture.
