PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device capable of sensing the lighted condition of a discharge lamp using a simple and efficient circuit configuration. SOLUTION: A control power supply circuit 2a prepares a power supply of an inverter control circuit 3 for controlling an inverter circuit from an auxiliary winding 17b of an inverter transformer of an inverter circuit as a main circuit and supplies the power to the inverter control circuit 3. The lamp voltage is sensed directly by sensing the output voltage of the control power supply circuit 2a using a lamp voltage sensing circuit 25, and the lighted condition of the discharge lamp is sensed. At this point, the control power supply circuit 2a is commonly used also as the lamp voltage sensing circuit 25 for sensing the lamp lighted condition, which eliminates necessity for provide any separate circuit for sensing the lamp voltage, to ensure simplification of the circuit configuration, and the invention can be embodied in an efficient circuit configuration.
