PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high purity epoxy resin with a reduced amount of impurity chlorine content without increase in an epoxy equivalent. SOLUTION: This method for producing an epoxy resin comprises reacting a polyhydric phenolic compound (a) with an epihalohydrin (b) and an alkaline substance, where both a strong alkali (c) with an electro-dissociation degree of 0.1 to 1.0 at the dilution of 1 L/mol and a weak acid (d) with an electro- dissociation degree of 0.01 to 0.001 at the dilution of 1 L/mol are used as the alkaline substance.
