PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To take a measure for the safety of a drive unit such as an elevator device adopting a new driving system. SOLUTION: The drive unit has a belt which moves in the longitudinal direction while pressing a prescribed region of a rope or belt-like member supporting a moved body, in contact with the tension member. The drive unit also has a cover, for example, a transparent cover, for covering the surface of a sheave and the belt, or a cover with an angle member to cover the belt, sufficiently taking the safety of the driving unit of the new system into consideration. As a result, the reliability of the drive unit is significantly improved and the inspection work can be performed quite easily. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
