<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle control device capable of improving turnout traveling performance of a vehicle when actuation of an engine having a solenoid-operated valve has abnormality. <P>SOLUTION: When action abnormality occurs at an intake valve 74 as the solenoid-operated valve or an exhaust valve 75, driving of the vehicle is controlled as a vehicle control mode is changed to such a mode that engine brake force is reduced by a fail time control means 112. Engine brake force is thus reduced in turnout traveling.
