A method for purifying a material comprises adding it to a non-aqueous solvent to form a solution, contacting the solution with an ion exchange resin or adsorbent and separating the non-aqueous solvent from the solution. The non-aqueous solvent may be a halogenated hydrocarbon, ketone, alcohol, ether, hydrocarbon, ester, nitrile or a mixture thereof. A preferred non-aqueous solvent is tetrafluoroehtane. The material to be purified may comprise an extract from a botanical material, a flavour or a fragrance. In use, the method is suitable for the purification of nicotine so as to form a low-colour nicotine. |
