A composition comprises a low glycaemic index sugar and one or more flavonoid. The composition may be used as a carbohydrate substitute, in particular as a replacement for digestible starch and/or sucrose. The low glycaemic index sugar may be fructose, mannose or lyxose. Compositions of this type are particularly useful as a sweetener, in the manufacture of foods and beverages, or in the manufacture of medicaments where the compositions are a healthier and therapeutic alternative to sucrose and/or digestible starch. The composition can be used to lower glycosylation reactions in the body and are particularly useful for the therapeutic prophylactic treatment of diabetes. The composition may also contain prebiotics, vitamins and minerals. If the composition is to be used as a starch replacement, it advantageously contains a prebiotic, such as polydextrose, and a non-digestible fibre, such as cellulose. |
